Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Christmas comes early for some Pinellas principals, APs

December

The principals and assistant principals at the four Pinellas high schools under strict state oversight - Gibbs, Lakewood, Boca Ciega and Dixie Hollins - are getting extra pay this year in the form of "administrator retention supplements."

The Pinellas County School Board approved the extra pay - $5,000 for principals and $2,000 for assistant principals - last week. The money is coming from the school improvement grant awarded by the Florida Department of Education.

The principals and APs received the first half of the money today. They'll get the rest at another date.

The teachers at the four schools are getting $1,000 extra.

According to the item in last week's board agenda packet, the retention supplement "is proposed as compensation for acknowledgement and acceptance of the importance of working collaboratively toward the achievement of the objective of highest student achievement and to participate in the implementation of the (turnaround) model."
