Class-size proposal headed to House floor
Wesley Chapel Republican Rep. Will Weatherford's proposal to give voters the chance to loosen the class-size mandate cleared its last committee this afternoon and is headed to the House floor.
HJR 919 would put an amendment on the 2010 ballot that would freeze the class-size standards at the current schoolwide average, averting a stricter classroom maximum scheduled to go into effect next year. The mandate stems from a 2002 amendment approved by 52 percent of Florida voters.
The House Rules & Calendar Council advanced the measure on an 18-4 vote, with four Democrats in the nay count. Most of the concern voiced was over the conflict of voting on an amendment to loosen standards in November 2010, but having to implement the strict standards by August 2010, when that school year starts.
