Colorado's SB 6 is led by ... a Democrat
SB 6 bit the dust this week, but its cousin in Colorado just emerged. SB 10-191 is led by Sen. Mike Johnston, a Denver Democrat, and has 18 sponsors, 9 from each party, including the Democratic Speaker of the House, according to this story. Among other things, it would:
* Base 50 percent of a teacher's evaluation on student growth
* Return tenured teachers to probation if they don't have good evaluations for two years
* Require mutual consent for placement of teachers in specific schools
There was a time, not long ago, when it would have been unthinkable for more than a rogue Democrat or two in the Florida Legislature to support vouchers. But now vouchers get solid, bipartisan support (20 House Dems supported this year's proposed expansion). Is it just a matter of time before the same thing happens with efforts to overhaul the teaching profession?
