In making school visits around Florida, outgoing Education Commissioner John Winn heard complaints from many teachers that parents just don't get the state education system. One educator suggested making a DVD with internet links to explain it all. That was last year.
Several months and $1-million later, the DVD is ready to debut. All 67 school districts received boxes upon boxes of Your Child, Your Public Schools on Tuesday and Wednesday. There were enough to give to every enrolled student, plus extras. The district I visited today got 68,000 copies.
Featuring teachers, parents and students from around the state, the DVD talks about the Sunshine State Standards, school grades, school choice and FCAT. It offers advice on how parents can participate in their children's education. And it offers lots of links to internet sites with more information.
DOE officials plan a big press conference on the release tomorrow, so they were tight-lipped today. But in past interviews, they said the main goal is to improve parents' knowledge about Florida's school system.
"We're just really finding that parents don't have the information they need," spokeswoman Jennifer Fennell said last July. "We were told we need to increase parent communication, and we're going to."
