A contract deal in the works for Pasco teachers?

The United School Employees of Pasco and the Pasco school district administration had been scheduled to meet Tuesday with a special magistrate to discuss how they might get past their contract dispute, which primarily focuses on things such as pay and benefits.

That meeting is canceled, with a special executive session of the School Board set to take place instead. Word is that the board will consider a contract settlement reached during private talks between USEP and district representatives in the weeks leading up to today's impact hearing date.

Folks on both sides say they've been "sworn to secrecy" on the details. But they will tell the Gradebook this: If the board accepts the terms tonight, a ratification vote could be imminent. We'll let you know the specifics as soon as we get them.

In the meantime, board members continue to hold town hall meetings on budget cuts, as the deadline to renew teacher contracts for 2011-12 approaches at the end of the month. As you hear of layoff notices, nonrenewals or other actions, let us know. We want to be able to share your stories.
