Contract for research into black student gaps on hold
Pinellas Superintendent Julie Janssen suggested last week that Northwestern researcher David Figlio might be able to help the district pinpoint why black students in Pinellas score lower in reading and math than black students in Florida's other big districts. But Janssen told board members in an email today that she won't bring them a contract for consideration tonight, saying she needed a couple more weeks:
I will hold off until May 10 bringing a contract to you for Dr. Figlio's services. My reason for doing this is that I have made some progress toward securing outside funding and additional resources. Additionally, our meeting on May 4 with Dr. Figlio will help us further define the scope of his services and estimate the ultimate cost to the District. I will use my spending authority to compensate Dr. Figlio for his time and expenses in meeting with us on May 4.
