Cox Elementary gets new principal

Data Perennially struggling Cox Elementary School in Dade City will get its first new principal in more than a decade next month.

Yvonne Reins, left, currently the principal of Sunray Elementary in New Port Richey, will take over Cox in May, assistant superintendent David Scanga told the Gradebook. Reins will replace Leila Mizer, who announced her departure in March.

Mizer will work in the district office in a job that has yet to be determined, Scanga said.

Mizer has said D-rated Cox, which is restructuring under federal education guidelines, needs someone in charge who has a fresh perspective. Reins, who took over Sunray in June 2006, is a "great choice" to move Cox ahead in its pursuit of improved academic achievement, Scanga said.

Sunray is a Title I school just like Cox. It received a C grade from the state last year and a B the year before.
