Crist: "I'm evaluating my options"
Gov. Charlie Crist won't go so far as to say that Bill Montford is his preferred choice for Florida's next education commissioner. But Crist tells the Gradebook that he is not pleased with the State Board of Education's decision not to include his old friend in the finalist pool.
"I think he's a very qualified candidate and I have encouraged him to participate in the process," Crist said. "I think it would be very good for him to participate in the process."
Unfortunately, he continued, the State Board did not choose to include folks who applied after the July 23 deadline, including Montford, regardless of their qualifications. Florida's school children need the best leader for the state education system, even if that person missed the application due date, he said.
"The board has the right to vote," Crist said. "They made a vote yesterday that they felt was appropriate, and it disappointed me."
Will he push the issue?
"I'm evaluating my options," the governor said.
