Crist: Use school building money to boost economy
No word yet on when lawmakers will reschedule the special session for dealing with Florida's $1-billion revenue shortfall, but Gov. Crist is telling education leaders that budget-cutting is only "half the equation."
Florida needs to revive its economy, he maintains, and what better way than to build, build, build?
In a letter sent today to education "stakeholders," Gov. Crist says he is encouraging lawmakers to dole out earlier than usual the $315-million in bonding available for school districts, community colleges and universities to build facilities.
Lawmakers usually only divvy up construction bucks during each spring's regular session, but "appropriating these funds now could substantially increase the vitality of this state while not increasing the tax burden on this state," Crist writes.
