Deadline: Last day to apply for Pinellas County superintendent

Today is the last day to apply for superintendent of Pinellas County Schools. The deadline is 5 p.m. We'll be posting new applicants as they come in. So far, there are about a half dozen new candidates. They include:

Ron Ciranna: has been the district's head of human resources since November 2010. He held the same position in Polk County between July 2007 and November 2010. He also was superintendent of a small Michigan school district between September 2000 and January 2004. Ciranna has previously applied for superintendent jobs in Broward, Polk and Charlotte counties.

Constance Jones: has been chief academic officer for Lee County Schools since 2003. She was an accreditation specialist for the Maryland Department of Education for one year and was a director of education policy for the Commonwealth Policy Institute Network in Washington D.C. for two years. She was a finalist for the top job in Palm Beach County last year. The post went to the interim superintendent, Wayne Gent.

Kathyrn LeRoy: has been chief academic officer of Duval County Schools since 2008. She spent a year as chief officer of mathematics and science for the district. Before that, she served as executive director of science for the Miami-Dade school district.

Stephen Jason: has been director of special services for Washington Township Public Schools in New Jersey since 1999. He held the same position in another New Jersey school district for a year before that.

Jeffrey Moss: has been superintendent of Lee County Schools in North Carolina since January 2009. He also served as superintendent of Beaufort County Schools and Stanly County Schools, both in North Carolina. According to a TV report, Moss drew criticism last year for having students write letters to lawmakers to protest education budget cuts. See that story here.

Jeff Kyle: has been superintendent of the Raymore-Peculiar School District in Missouri since 2006. He was assistant superintendent of the same district for a year before moving to the top job. He also has been superintendent of two other small districts. According to the Columbia Daily Tribune, Kyle took heat from the ACLU for his response to an incident in which two white students gave a black student a string noose. See that story here.

Carlos Martinez: has been a supervisory education program specialist for the U.S. Department of Education since 2009. He was assistant secretary of the New Mexico Public Education Department for two years. He also worked as a supervisor for Hillsborough County Schools from 1993 to 2000, where he was responsible for the establishment and administration of a consortium of eight school districts.

Vincent Pellegrino: has been interim provost at Grantham University, a for-profit college, in Missouri since 2010. He also was interim provost for five campuses between 2009 and 2010. He was a research intern at the University of Minnesota Holocaust and Genocide Center between June 2008 and December 2009.

Alan Cox: has been principal of Lincoln Park Academy in the St. Lucie County School District since 2008. He also was an area assistant superintendent of schools for three years; he was moved to principal because of budget cuts. He was director of the NC Wise Project for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina between 2000 and 2007.

Art Stellar: has been superintendent of Burke County Public Schools in North Carolina since 2009. He was superintendent of Taunton Public Schools between 2005 and 2009. According to the Daily Freeman, Stellar was ousted from Burke County two years early after some board members said he had become a polarizing figure. See that story here.
