Desai gets another shot

Desai_3 Akshay Desai, the state Board of Education member who was twisting in the political wind (see the St. Pete Times story here), has been re-appointed to his seat by Gov. Charlie Crist. Crist made the decision Monday night, on the eve of a 45-day deadline to either re-appoint the St. Petersburg physician or let him fade away. The governor originally appointed Desai in January, but state senators balked at confirmation because of concerns about Desai's company, Universal Health Care Insurance, which has drawn heated criticism from the state insurance commissioner. (In February, in fact, McCarty recommended liquidating Universal.) The decision to re-appoint means Desai can stay in the seat until he is considered by next year's senate. (Times photo)
