Divided Pinellas board chooses Carvalho

CarvalhoAlberto Carvalho, a 19-year veteran of Miami-Dade schools, will be the next superintendent in Pinellas, the School Board decided this morning.

The seven-member board appeared to favor Carvalho at a morning workshop. Board members then convened a special meeting at 11 a.m, where they voted 4-3 to begin contract negotiations with Carvalho on a multiyear contract. A final vote on the contract is scheduled for Sept. 23.

The board chose Carvalho, 43, over Pinellas interim superintendent Julie Janssen and Nicholas M. Gledich, chief of operations for Orange County schools based in Orlando. Carvalho is an associate superintendent for Miami-Dade, the nation's fourth-largest school system.

Board members voting for Carvalho were Nancy Bostock, Janet Clark, Carol Cook and Jane Gallucci. Board members Mary Brown, Linda Lerner and Peggy O'Shea favored Janssen.
