Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Does it look like a conflict of interest?

As today's St. Petersburg Times story noted, Pinellas school district administrator Janet Hernandez - the former professional development director who Superintendent Julie Janssen wanted to make the head of dropout prevention - played a role in the hiring and employment of her daughter's boyfriend. Hernandez wrote a reference letter for him, called another one of his references on the district's behalf and, on three occasions, signed off on part-time work for him - all, apparently, without disclosing that she and Michael Hernandez have a close, personal connection.

Go here to see some of the public records behind the story, including Michael Hernandez's applications; his reference letters (include the one from Janet Hernandez); and the contracted service contracts and additional duty forms she signed to authorize professional development work for him.
