Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Does new federal funding for sex ed spell the end for abstinence-only policies?

A broad range of sex education programs across the nation are sharing a five-year, $375-million federal grant this fall, according to the Associated Press, which describes it as "the first time in more than a decade" that such programs won't be driven entirely by abstinence-only policies.

Some of the new programs pass out condoms, and some of them don't. But none seem to put quite the emphasis on abstinence that state and federal administrations have pushed in recent years.

Does this seem to be a step in the right direction? Or do you think the pendulum is swinging back too far in the other direction?
