ESE/ELL task force to meet this week in Orlando

After a handful of telephone conference calls, the Florida education commissioner's Task Force on Inclusion and Accountability has scheduled face-to-face meetings for Thursday (1 p.m.) and Friday (8 a.m.) at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

Commissioner Gerard Robinson convened the panel earlier this month, after several parents and activists complained that new state school grading rules would hurt students in special needs programs and those still learning English.

The task force is now trying to find an acceptable method to hold those students academically accountable for their performance, as the federal government has demanded as part of the state's NCLB waiver approval, while also not penalizing them or their schools for their known deficits.

You can watch the group's meeting online on the DOE website. Visit the department's NCLB waiver page to listen to audio recordings of the conference call sessions.
