Family still tries to collect in case against Pasco school district
Marcus Button was left with vision problems, brain damage and the need for full-time care after a 2006 crash with a Pasco County school bus. Investigators deemed the school bus driver at fault in the accident. A jury awarded the Button family $1.625 million for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and future care.
The family has been attempting to collect ever since. Because the verdict was against a government agency, getting any money beyond $200,000 requires an act of the state Legislature.
Such a measure failed in 2011 and again in 2012 without so much as a hearing. But that doesn't mean they've given up.
Sen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla has filed yet another relief bill on behalf of the Buttons for the coming 2013 session. It would allow them access to $675,000. Perhaps the measure will fare better for the family this time around.
