First it was Miami Heat star Shaquille O'Neal urging South Florida students to take the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test seriously. Now the Holy Dancing Cow, John Mallory of Dania Beach, shows up at Sickles High in Tampa with a similar message. Maybe you saw him once on America's Got Talent. It's nice, of course, for entertainers to share their celebrity (however major or minor it might be) with our youth. Maybe teens do pay more attention to someone who's been on TV than someone who tells them nightly to turn it off. But has it really come to this? If schools aren't giving kids prizes just for showing up to take the test, they're amping up the pep rallies just to keep everyone interested. Some of us remember when high-stakes tests didn't seem so high-stakes, when you found out you were taking the test on that day. Oh for the good old days.
