A few kind words for superintendent Fiorentino
Pasco schools superintendent Heather Fiorentino has taken it on the chin lately.
Voters rejected her bid for a third term in office. School Board members have criticized many of her actions. Some national media have blasted her district handling of concerns over partisan speeches to high school students.
So the look of surprise on her face Tuesday wasn't too surprising when Fiorentino received some unexpected praise.
Peter Hanzel, an active Wesley Chapel Republican Club member and one-time School Board candidate, came to the board meeting Tuesday and thanked Fiorentino for her years of service. He said Fiorentino treated employees, staff and residents "with fairness, kindness and consideration."
"You have just been a positive role model for many people that I know," Hanzel told Fiorentino.
Land O'Lakes High teacher Robert Marsh also offered some positive remarks for the outgoing superintendent. He spoke specifically of the way her administration dealt with the recent voter registration mess that has many Republicans up in arms.
"You did a fine job handling that Gulf High situation. You did it right," Marsh said, calling it a "political misstep" to consider the activities a crime, as some have suggested.
Fiorentino quietly thanked the men for their words and went on with business. She has just one more board meeting to attend before her term expires.
