Florida Board of Education approves single-gender schools for Hillsborough
Faced with a mandate to reform, many Florida schools that perform poorly on the state's differentiated accountability model opt to make changes at the edges.
Not Franklin Middle School in Hillsborough County.
Rather than change principals, or give more training to staff, Hillsborough and Franklin leaders have decided to transform the school into a Single Gender Boys Preparatory Academy.
The girls assigned to Franklin would be transferred to Mann or Giunta middle schools, or have the opportunity to transfer to a Single Gender Girls Preparatory Academy at Ferrell Middle School at seek other magnet options.
Boys at Ferrell would have the choice of attending Mann or Giunta, or to apply to the Franklin Academy or to other magnet options.
The State Board of Education gave the thumbs up to this proposal on Tuesday. It should go into effect in the fall. Good idea?
