Florida Board of Education to consider extending commissioner search

The Florida Board of Education has called an emergency conference call meeting for Tuesday with just one item up for consideration. Members will discuss whether to extend the application deadline for education commissioner candidates.

So far, just nine applications have come in and been made public. Last year, the search firm Ray and Associates recommended extending the application time period after the deadline passed and the state had 19 applications. We haven't seen any letter explaining the rationale for this year's proposal.

The board is seeking a new commissioner after the abrupt resignation of Gerard Robinson, who spent a rocky year on the job before deciding to return to Virginia, where he had been secretary of education. Ray and Associates executives had said they did not expect the most competitive resumes to arrive until the final days of the search.

The current application deadline is Sept. 27.
