Florida Board of Education member Susan Story resigns
Just like that, Gov.-elect Rick Scott could find himself with four supporters on the seven-member Florida State Board of Education as he takes office.
Susan Story, whose term was not to expire until 2013, has resigned from the board after taking a new job in Atlanta. That decision gives Scott three slots to fill on the board -- the terms of members T. Willard Fair and Akshay Desai expire at the end of December. A fourth member, Kathleen Shanahan, serves on Scott's transition team.
Scott has indicated a desire to continue reform efforts started in Florida more than a decade ago by Jeb Bush. There's also been talk that he might be interested in revamping the Department of Education and possibly replacing the commissioner of education. See his education campaign platform here.
A spokesman for Scott said via e-mail, "the Governor-elect is conducting a top-to-bottom review of every state agency but we aren't prepared to comment on the status of that review nor on specific personnel decisions until we are ready to make an announcement." A spokesman for Gov. Charlie Crist has said Crist has no plans to nominate any new State Board members before leaving office.
