Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Florida Board of Education needs to enforce evaluation rules, Rep. John Legg says

During debate on Senate Bill 6, sponsor Rep. John Legg stressed over and over that many of the things the hotly contested legislation would do simply clarified existing law — things that school districts were not doing.

Now that the governor has vetoed the bill, the Republican chairman of the House Pre-K-12 Policy Committee tells the Gradebook he expects the State Board of Education to more strictly enforce those rules relating to evaluations and end-of-course testing. He's all but abandoned the notion of going back at the laws one more time this session, noting there's too little time left.

It is current law," Legg said in an e-mail. "I am confident that SBE will be reviewing it since it was highlighted during the debate and many board members were not aware that it was current law."

No word yet from the board as to how it plans to proceed.
