Florida Board of Education to rewrite teacher dismissal rules

The passage of Senate Bill 736 a year ago has prompted the Florida Department of Education to redefine "just cause" for purposes of suspending and dismissing teachers.

For instance, the new definition of "inefficiency" includes "failure to communicate appropriately with and relate to colleagues, administrators, subordinates, or parents" and "excessive absences or tardiness." The rule also codifies "unsatisfactory or ineffective performance evaluation ratings" as an acceptable reason for dismissal.

The rule rewrite goes to the State Board of Education on Thursday when it meets at the Tampa Airport Marriott. Some of the changes could generate some lively conversation.

We say "could," because so far there hasn't appeared to be much interest in this particular rule. The DOE reports that just 12 people participated in three workshops dealing with the rule proposal, and that no one submitted written comments or suggestions on the language.
