Florida education commissioner in Huffington Post
Florida Education Commissioner Eric J. Smith is backed by Republican Gov. Charlie Crist, and his positions are usually in sync with former Republican Gov. Jeb Bush. So why would he be getting a shout-out from a blogger at the liberal Huffington Post?
In this piece over the holiday break, Tom Vander Ark (a Bill Gates guy, and a big fan of Race to the Top) puts Smith on his Top 10 list of U.S. education reformers who will have an impact in 2010. Smith "is leveraging the progress that Gov. Bush made earlier in this decade; he's got a lock on phase 1 Race to the Top money," Vander Ark writes.
Also on Vander Ark's list: Arne Duncan (a Democrat); New York City schools chancellor Joel Klein (a Democrat); and liberal Congressional lion George Miller (a Democrat).
