Florida education news: teacher raises, school plan scrapped and website spoof
STEP UP FOR STEP RAISES: The Palm Beach County teachers union wants the school board to commit to "making teachers whole." The union hasn't said exactly what that means, but has run a publicity campaign about restoring step raises, which are annual increases based on experience, the Palm Beach Post reports.
SCHOOL SCRAPPED: A proposal for a new elementary school in Coconut Creek has been pulled. The owner said opposition made it impossible to continue with the plan, according to the Miami Herald.
PUBLIC COMPLAINTS: The names of students who submit complaints about teachers to public schools, including colleges, are subject to Florida's public records law, a Florida appellate court ruled Thursday, according to an Associated Press story in the Naples Daily News.
WEBSITE SPOOF: Hillsborough County School Board candidate Terry Kemple isn't pleased with a fake campaign website, saying his "ABC" plan stands for "abstinence, biology and Christ." Kemple is a conservative Christian activist running for the countywide District 7 seat.
ALGEBRA WORRIES: Thousands of students are turning to algebra boot camps this summer, in the hopes of passing the state's end-of-course exam, which is now required to graduate high school, the Orlando Sentinel repots.
