Florida higher education reform talk coming, but not necessarily in Texas terms
Florida Gov. Rick Scott certainly started the ball rolling on talk of reforming the state's higher education system when he tossed out the notion that Texas initiatives might be worth considering.
Texas-style changes might not be likely, one key lawmaker tells the Gradebook.
"Florida is not Texas," said Rep. John Legg, House speaker pro tem. "That plan, I would have some real reservations over. ... The whole Texas plan gives people like me a great deal of concern."
That doesn't mean the conversation won't occur, though, he added: "The dialogue of higher ed reform is something we should have. That is going to be a big issue this session."
Lawmakers return to Tallahassee for another round of committee meetings next week.
