Florida House seeks to keep the conversation on school choice alive
In creating new committees for the next legislative session, Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford has set up an education Choice and Innovation subcommittee. It's not necessarily to push new legislation, Weatherford told the redefinED blog.
“There’s a lot of reform and a lot of innovating taking place across the country and across the world,’’ Weatherford said. “I want the Legislature to lead this debate.’’
The subcommittee is slated to take up such issues as charter schools, virtual education and home schooling. Choice issues have gained some bipartisan support among Florida lawmakers in past years, but Democrats consistently have stressed that the choices should not detract from providing a high quality traditional public education for those who seek one.
What's your advice for the new Legislature as it approaches school choice issues in the coming year?
