Florida lawmakers to consider another voucher expansion

29

January

In today's more-detailed budget rollout, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist said in this statement that another expansion of the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program (voucher program to many) is a priority for the upcoming legislative session.

The statement mentions legislation that will "base the value of the scholarship on a fixed portion of the state cost for educating a child in public school." It will also allow the cap on tax credit contributions to automatically move up whenever the amount of contributions approaches the cap. Right now, a tax credit scholarship is worth $3,950 (current per-pupil spending in public school is $6,866). The cap is $118 million.

The governor's statement doesn't mention whether the legislation would also up the scholarship amount and/or increase the cap. We haven't seen any bills yet, but we'll be keeping track.
