Florida Legislature to consider longer school day for struggling schools

13_hour_school_clock.State Sen. David Simmons told The Gradebook last fall he intended to keep pushing for a longer school day for low performing schools, an idea he strongly backed as a state rep. Now he says more details will be forthcoming next week.

"The results are going to be so dramatic, people are going to say, 'Why weren't we doing this 10 or 15 years ago?' " he said.

Simmons, who chairs the Senate subcommittee on education appropriations, said he wants all D and F schools to get an extra hour. He estimated the tab could be as low as $30 million and as high as $100 million. He said he strongly believes the Legislature will be able to find the money.

"To those who don't want to do it, I say look at how little it costs," he said. "If they got a better plan, let them tell me."
