For Florida school budgets, "the rabbit is dead"
Here's our nominee for quote of the day from Tuesday's Florida Board of Education budget workshop, from Miami-Dade superintendent Alberto Carvalho.
Carvalho spoke for nearly 45 minutes about his district's many efforts to repair a broken budget system that had limited reserves and couldn't meet all its contractual obligations. Over 2-1/2 years, he said, the district had streamlined and improved its operations to a point where it didn't even have to lay off teachers for financial reasons this year.
But the effort to become efficient can only reach so far, Carvalho told the board. Here comes the quote:
"There is no more magic in public education. ... We have pulled the largest rabbit out of the smallest hat in the world. The rabbit is dead, the hat has been auctioned off."
He then called for improved funding to support the district's efforts to responsibly reorganize spending priorities, including the ones mandated but not funded by the state such as performance pay.
