Former FAMU faculty union leader calls on Ammons to reject bonus

Ammons Bilde Florida A&M's trustees gave president James Ammons, right, a six-figure bonus earlier this month.

Former faculty union president William Tucker, left, suggests in a piece for the Tallahassee Democrat that, for the good of the university, Ammons ought to turn it down.

"Some of my friends and colleagues are incredulous that Ammons would keep his fat bonus while asking faculty and staff to pony up more dollars to the university and work longer hours, while worrying about furloughs. During a more stable and prosperous economic time, FAMU supporters would not begrudge Ammons receiving a bonus. After all, he has had some notable accomplishments. But Florida's economic situation is anything but stable, and certainly not prosperous. The other presidents realized this and declined to accept their sizable bonuses."

Is Tucker right? Should Ammons give up the cash? Will he?
