Four charter school applicants seek to open in Pasco County

2

August

After receiving a time-crushing 11 applications last August, Pasco County charter schools supervisor Nancy Scowcroft expected another deluge this year.

Instead, she got barely a trickle.

Four groups — including three that were denied in the last round — met the 5 p.m. Wednesday deadline to apply to open a new charter school for the 2013-14 academic year.

Of note, Anne Corcoran, wife of state Rep. Richard Corcoran, has resubmitted an application to open Classical Preparatory Academy, which would focus curriculum on grammar, logic and rhetoric. This year, however, state Rep. Will Weatherford is not a member of the school's oversight board, because he has other commitments as House speaker.

Instead, the school boasts some new members on its advisory board. They include former Pasco sheriff Bob White and Patricia Levesque, who runs Jeb Bush's education foundation. Anne Corcoran said Levesque is a long-time friend who has helped prepare her charter application.
