Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Four Florida universities among Forbes's best buys

If you've been paying attention to the ongoing funding struggles at Florida's public universities, this news shouldn't come as a shock.

Four of Florida's 11 public universities made it to the top 20 of Forbes Magazine's "Top 100 Best Buy Colleges," the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports. The University of Florida placed 11th, Florida State University 13th, New College of Florida, 16th and the University of North Florida 19th.

For years, leaders of Florida's higher education institutions have clamored for higher tuition as the state's tuition remains almost dead last among public universities across the country. Beginning a few years ago, they've been allowed to incrementally increase tuition by no more than 15 percent per year. But they've still got a long way to go before reaching the national average.
