Furloughs looking likely for Pinellas school employees
Furloughs look likely for more than 11,000 Pinellas school employees, School Board members said today.
The board, meeting in a workshop, hasn’t approved any furlough days yet. But with the first budget hearing three weeks away -- and millions of dollars in cuts still to be made -- it left little doubt that it sees some amount of unpaid leave as inevitable.
“The question at this point is probably ‘how many (furlough days)’ instead of ‘will we,’ ” board member Carol Cook told the Gradebook.
Several board members rejected a union-backed idea that the district dip into its cliff reserve. "I think it would be irresponsible," said board chairwoman Janet Clark.
