Give all veterans in-state tuition, USF student group says

The Student Veterans Association at the University of South Florida is getting vocal about a bill that it hopes doesn't get lost in the melee of the 2011 Florida legislative session.

The group is actively supporting SB 826/ HB 683, a bipartisan bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Mike Fasano and Democratic Rep. Luis Garcia Jr. that would give all military veterans access to in-state tuition regardless of how long they have lived in the state.

“At a time when Florida is starving for highly skilled professional citizens and economic stimulus, our hope is that the bills sponsored by Senator Mike Fasano and Representative Luis Garcia will enable Florida to become the destination of choice for our Military servicemen and women. Florida has an opportunity to continue its veteran-friendly tradition and follow states such as Texas, Ohio, and Michigan in making affordable in-state tuition a reality for all veterans," SVA member Will Boland said in a release. Military veterans have served all 50 states, not just one."

The bills have been referred to several committees for review.
