Golfing for Moon Lake Elementary

Golf When we think of PTA golf tournament fundraisers, upscale schools with well-off parents come to mind.

Some schools in northwest Hillsborough, for instance, have raised tens of thousands of dollars in a single morning simply by getting out on the links.

So maybe it stands to reason that one of Pasco County's poorest schools -- Moon Lake Elementary -- is teeing off on the same angle. The beneficiary would be the school's aging technology system.

"Due to the recent mandates of Title I monies, we are no longer able to spend that money on technology," teacher Steve Loveless tells the Gradebook. "Many computers that are currently in all the classrooms are no longer usable and have been deemed 'too old to fix' by the district. We feel that updating these computers/technology in the classrooms would greatly benefit all children and help them to further succeed."

Moon Lake is holding an inaugural Tee It Up For Technology golf tourney at 1 p.m. June 5 at Beacon Woods Golf Course. The organizers still are seeking sponsors and participants. Team registration ends May 19. For information, contact Loveless at the school, 727-774-4600.
