Goodbye for Desai?

Desai One of Gov. Crist's two appointments to the state Board of Education may not be in that seat much longer. A few weeks ago, state senators decided to postpone confirmation of Akshay Desai, a St. Petersburg doctor and business executive, after the state insurance commissioner raised concerns about Desai's company, Universal Health Care Insurance. That put the ball in Crist’s court: The governor now has 45 days from the end of the session - that would be June 18, if The Gradebook can accurately navigate a desktop calendar - to re-appoint Desai. If he doesn't, Desai is gone. So will Crist stand by his man? The governor didn’t exactly offer a ringing endorsement this morning when The Gradebook caught up with him at the Pinellas County emergency operations center. Asked if Desai would continue to be his nominee, Crist said, "I don’t know. I'm reviewing that right now."
