Goodlette interested in chancellor job

1

April

Goodlette Former state Rep. Dudley Goodlette said today that he has an interest in "at least exploring" the job of university system chancellor and that the Texas firm leading the search sent him a letter last month saying he has been "formally nominated" for the opening.

Goodlette, a Naples Republican who is serving as House Speaker Larry Cretul's chief of staff, said he has been too busy to respond to the letter and hasn't made any "special or particular inquiries."

But in past months he has talked to former Chancellor Mark Rosenberg about the job, and he says several university presidents have encouraged him to apply. Rosenberg stepped down in February to return to Florida International University. University of North Florida president John Delaney has the interim job, but has said he's not interested in staying on.

The deadline for applications was Tuesday, but Board of Governors members have said that date is flexible. Goodlette says he'll probably "at least call and ask about the status" of the process and if indeed it's flexible, probably pursue it after the session ends. "Can't carry water on both shoulders," he says.

"There may be some fits," said Goodlette, who has long ties to education, through Florida Gulf Coast University and Edison State College. "I would need to know more about the criteria that they've established."
