It's now officially unclear what's going on with Florida's application for federal education stabilization funds.

U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek and U.S. Department of Education officials say they're waiting for the paperwork, deadline ASAP if not sooner. Meek criticized Gov. Charlie Crist, a potential opponent for the state's open Senate seat, for taking too long to apply.

No need to wait for some phantom "guidelines and guidance," Meek argued.

To which Crist's spokesman replied, essentially, chill out.

"An application for the waiver does not yet exist," Crist spokesman Sterling Ivey told the Gradebook in an e-mail. "Governor Crist is working closely with the White House and Secretary Duncan through this process to secure the maximum funding for Florida's students."

Looking for more details? So are we. That was the sum total of the governor's response to Meek's comments. Meanwhile, district officials across the state watch and hope that the money comes to help them balance their budgets.
