Gov. Crist will "do the right thing," his dad says

April

SP_251656_DEAN_ CRISTDAD As speculation runs rampant as to the future of Senate Bill 6, we turned to one of Gov. Crist's closest confidantes -- his father -- to see if we could get a read on the possibility of a veto.

Dr. Charles J. Crist apologized for being somewhat circumspect, saying he didn't want to betray any confidences of his son. In other words, he didn't give us any black and white answers. But he did offer some insights, along with an expectation that the governor won't let the controversy to swirl too long now that it's in his hands.

"I've told him we've always been pro education in this family," Dr. Crist told the Gradebook. "I served on the School Board, and I have two daughters in education. Charlie has already voted for the stimulus bill primarily because he saved about 26,000 teacher jobs with that. His inclination is to protect the profession."

Dr. Crist observed that this legislation is "weighing heavily on Charlie," who has sought advice from a variety of people and sources. "Charlie takes it very seriously. He'll do the right thing."

The governor has until Friday to act on the bill. If he does nothing, the bill becomes law.
