Gov. Rick Scott adds new member to Florida Board of Education

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has gone with a prominent Jacksonville-area businessman to fill one of the two remaining State Board of Education vacancies.

Gary Chartrand, executive chairman of Acosta Sales and Marketing, will replace T. Willard Fair, whose tenure ended after two terms on the board.

Chartrand, 56, led the effort to bring Teach for America to Duval County and also invested to open the first KIPP charter school in Florida, also in Duval County. He serves on KIPP's local board of directors, and has been a leader in the Jacksonville Public Education Foundation.

Chartrand's appointment comes as the State Board embarks upon a search for a new commissioner of education. The Florida Senate still must confirm him to the position.

Scott recently reappointed Dr. Akshay Desai to the board. He still must replace Susan Story, who resigned from the board last year.
