Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Gov. Rick Scott creates task force to explore improving Florida's higher education

With criticisms mounting that Florida's higher education system is buckling, Gov. Rick Scott on Friday announced the creation of a new task force aimed at finding ways to make improvements.

His choice to lead the effort is Dale Brill, president of the Florida Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

"The state has a vested interest in ensuring its higher education system produces world-class talent to serve as engaged citizens and meet the demands of Florida’s emerging knowledge-based economy," Scott said in a news release. "It’s time to assess the progress of prior reform efforts and identify strategies to improve efficiencies and enhance the system’s effectiveness as an economic catalyst."

Legislative leaders will name other members of the task force, which will update its efforts on Facebook and on its new website as it works to prepare a report for Scott by mid-November. See the governor's executive order establishing the panel attached below.
