Gov. Rick Scott to make higher ed announcement today at St. Petersburg College

Gov. Rick Scott issued a brief announcement Sunday that he'll appear at St. Petersburg College at 10 a.m. Monday morning to "make an announcement regarding higher education." He included no details.

We've heard that Scott will stick close to his theme of keeping a college education affordable, perhaps by issuing a challenge to the state's colleges and universities to create $10,000 bachelor's degree programs. The idea comes from Texas, where Gov. Rick Perry has so far unsuccessfully pushed it

Perry told the Austin American-Statesman this fall that nine Texas schools offer or have announced plans for such degrees. The paper's review of those programs revealed that most did not include books in the $10,000 price, and that most relied on financial aid subsidies and community college credits to arrive at that cost.

A bachelor's degree in nursing at St. Petersburg College costs more than $12,000 in tuition alone. Stay tuned to learn whether Scott will issue the challenge, and to hear the reaction.
