Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Gov. Rick Scott to sign more education bills

Early in the spring, Florida Gov. Rick Scott made his first big mark on the state's education system by signing SB 736 into law, changing the way teachers are evaluated, paid and contracted.

Today he plans to put more pieces of his education vision into the statutes during a 9 a.m. bill signing in Ocoee. On tap:

HB 965, expanding the state's corporate tax credit scholarship program

HB 1329, expanding access to McKay scholarships for disabled students

HB 1331, changing the rules for participation in opportunity scholarship programs

HB 1546, making it easier to open and maintain charter schools

HB 7197, requiring schools to move to digital materials and expanding virtual education options

No surprise Scott will be signing these into law. No wonder school choice advocate Gerard Robinson is so looking forward to becoming Florida's new education commissioner.
