Grego's first letter to Pinellas school employees
New superintendent Mike Grego sent his first letter to Pinellas County school employees Friday. In it, he says that he wants to create a culture of excellence, pay teachers and administrators fairly and that he believes the "greatest predictor" of student achievement is teacher effectiveness.
Here is the letter in full:
After weeks of anticipation, I am thrilled to begin my tenure as your next superintendent. I trust it will be a long and productive relationship for all of us.
As I shared with School Board members in my initial interview with them, it is my fervent belief that the key ingredient to improving district performance is a relentless focus on student achievement and the key operational efficiencies that result in maximum resources being directed into the classroom. It is my intent to bring a laser focus to these interrelated tasks.
At the same time, we will concentrate on creating a culture of excellence and commitment of all stakeholders. All of us – students, parents, teachers, support staff, administrators, School Board members – must commit to the principle of increased achievement for all students, at all levels and from every background.
Meanwhile, I will strive to invest in our teachers and administrators by training them well, equipping them properly, compensating them fairly, and ensuring excellence in instructional delivery. Holding fast to this commitment is of the utmost importance, as I truly believe that the greatest predictor of student achievement is teacher effectiveness.
Of course, effective communication will be a crucial element in ensuring our success. I’ve already had the pleasure of meeting many of you as I’ve embarked on school tours and visits to community groups. Going forward, I will strive to increase the level and accuracy of information with a focus on building effective two-way communication between all those interested in and affected by public school education.
Overall, we will build on what’s good in the district and work hard to make Pinellas County Schools the top-performing district in the nation. I am convinced that if we unite our efforts, keeping student achievement at the center of all our decisions, we will excel as a district and a community.
I’m excited about the opportunity to join with families, employees, business leaders and community members as we begin working together to fulfill the district’s vision of 100 percent student success.
