Happy 4th of July?

July

small.jpgAsking for Independence Day as a paid holiday seemed like a simple enough proposal to United School Employees of Pasco president Lynne Webb.

"The Fourth of July has come and gone," Webb said, passing the request across the negotiating table Wednesday afternoon. "We're not going to retroactively furlough that day."

Really?

Employee relations supervisor Bryan Jack, the district's lead negotiator for its school-related employee contract, said he could not immediately agree. "I have to take it back," Jack said, promising to have an answer by the next time the sides meet.

Webb laughed with a scoffing tone. "If you guys want to seem like unpatriotic scrooges," she said, shaking her head.

"We certainly are not that," Jack responded, as he tucked the proposal into a folder and moved on to another memorandum of understanding for review.

Webb chose to hold off on accepting one of the district's requests -- one that earlier she had considered noncontroversial -- pending the district's response on the holiday. The sides are supposed to get back together in two weeks.

Last year, the district made no final decision on the Fourth of July holiday until mid-August.
