Here's hoping your Thanksgiving plans aren't set in stone

The debate over Hillsborough County's early release days in the teacher contract has obscured another, arguably bigger, change in the school year calendar.

Thanksgiving is again a week-long holiday, instead of the three days off that were listed originally. Thanks for the early warning.

Perhaps we Hillsborough parents should have anticipated the switch, as the School Board and teachers association did this to us last year, too. But maybe some people actually put some stock in the board's approval of the calendar in the spring. Getting vacation days during Thanksgiving is often a competitive process at work for many parents. At least all the teenagers will be available for babysitting, right?

And that's not all. Other calendar changes include:

  • Oct. 29 and Feb. 21 are now school days instead of days off.
  • March 18-21 is now a four-day weekend.
  • The last day of school has been switched from June 10 to June 13.

That's all the changes the district announced in addition to those contentious early release days. We can only hope that's the last of them.
