Hernando Schools raise eyebrows with letter to vendors

BROOKSVILLE -- Here's a new way for school districts to cut costs: ask your vendors to take less money for contracts they're already working on.

That's what Hernando County Schools superintendent Wayne Alexander did recently, sending a letter asking more than 170 companies to cut their fees.

Some vendors wonder if they're being pressured to play ball or lose out on future contracts. Experts say they've never seen anything like it, and warn it could bring the district legal trouble.
