Hernando superintendent search committee down to 10 candidates

24

January

The search committee charged with reviewing the 34 candidates for superintendent of the Hernando County School District made quick work of the list at their first meeting.

All but 10 of the candidates were eliminated.

The 11-person committee will finalize their candidate recommendations to the School Board during their next meeting on Jan. 31. The recommendations will then be sent to the board on Feb. 1.

Of the 10 remaining candidates, only district assistant superintendents Ken Pritz and Sonya Jackson were moved into the “yes” column during the first meeting.

The committee is still waiting to decide on the other candidates. They have not yet determined how many candidates they will recommend to the School Board.

Seven of the 10 candidates represent districts with 10,000 or more students, six are from Florida and three are sitting superintendents, said Hernando County Classroom Teachers Association Joe Vitalo.

Thursday afternoon’s screening process went fairly smoothly.

Several candidates were initially eliminated because they did not meet the job description for the position. Candidates needed to have a master’s degree and five years administrative experience in education or a related field.

The committee also eliminated those who did not provide all the requested material on their application, who made substantial errors in their applications or who didn’t have district-level administrative experience.

Here’s a list of the remaining candidates, aside from Pritz and Jackson:

• Randy Schrader, Boise, Idaho

• Jonathan Mulford, West Plains, Mo.

• Diana Greene, Ocala

• Lori Romano

• Michael Kopakowski, Glassboro, N.J.

• Constance Jones, Estero

• Rebecca Fleck, Sebring

• Steven Cobb, Fort Wayne, Ind.

Greene and Jones are also finalists for the Manatee schools superintendent position. That position will pay between $170,000 and a $195,000, according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

The Hernando superintendent’s job is advertised between $100,000 and $130,000.
