High school teacher files to challenge Hernando School Board incumbent

BROOKSVILLE -- A veteran Hernando County School Board member who wants to keep her job for another four years now has a second opponent in the 2010 election.

Michael Bainum, a culinary arts teacher at Hernando High School, filed today to run for the District 5 seat held by Sandra Nicholson.

Cynthia Moore, an elementary school teacher in the Hernando County School District for 40 years before retiring at the end of the 2003-04 school year, filed to run for the seat in July.

There are two other School Board spots up for grabs.

Vivian Coogler of Brooksville has prequalified for the District 3 seat held by Dianne Bonfield, who has not filed for reelection.

Board member John Sweeney has not filed for reelection to his District 1 seat and so far no other candidates have announced an intent to run.

The qualifying period for candidates starts at noon June 14 and ends at noon June 18.
